The Survival Machine

An ancient brain,
never built to trade.

You have already tried the courses, the journals, the trading-psychology shelf. The setups improved. The results did not. That gap has a cause, and it is not the market.

The human brain evolved for a world without screens, leverage, or P&L. Left unexamined, those old instincts can run your account by rules built for a different game: chasing the shiny object, fleeing the loss, mistaking a rush for an edge.

A study of 66,465 brokerage households found the most active traders trailed the market by about 6.5 points a year after costs, mostly from trading too much rather than from bad picks. The cost sat with the operator placing them. A separate study found investors sell winners sooner than losers (Odean, 1998). TIP helps you see how your own answers line up with those patterns.

Basis · Barber & Odean, “Trading Is Hazardous to Your Wealth.” No performance promises. A read on the mind, not the market.

The Access Wall · Who has been able to get this

This kind of read has existed for years.
It just was not pointed at you.

Cognitive assessment of traders is not new. Prop desks, funds and family offices have been mapping how their traders are wired for a long time, working with psychologists who specialise in trading populations.

What has been missing is not the science. It is the access. That work happens behind a hiring process, a desk seat, or an hourly rate set for institutions, and it is built to answer the firm's question, which is whether to allocate to you. The retail side got the same handful of biases repeated across books and course modules, with the integration left to the reader.

TIP takes the frameworks that work already sits on, the ability model, the reflection test, the regulation research, and points them at the trader who never had a desk to sit at. Same research foundations. Different door. You are the one who commissioned the file, so it answers your question rather than a firm's.

Scope · TIP has not yet been validated and makes no performance claims. How TIP sits between institutional and retail.

Admissions · Read before you begin

This file is not for everyone.

Made for the trader who
  • has worked the strategy, the journal, the psychology shelf, and still feels the gap
  • suspects the problem sits upstream of the setup, in the hand placing it
  • wants a precise, unflattering read, not another pep talk
Not for the trader who
  • wants signals, tips, or a system to copy
  • is here for a promise of profit or a win-rate
  • would rather not read something uncomfortable about themselves
From the founder
Jonathan Campeau, founder of TIP
Jonathan Campeau
Founder · TIP

I put real money on a live account back in 2016, blew it up, and spent the better part of a decade circling the same problem, in and out, never quite solving it.

Most traders do. We blow an account and blame the strategy. We blow another and blame the market. After enough damage, we start looking at the variable we'd been avoiding all along: ourselves.

The strategy was learnable. Anybody can learn a strategy. The hard part, the part that took nine months, was learning to manage the one person who shows up to every single trade. Me.

TIP is the operating manual I wish I'd had when I first started. Some of it will be hard to read. The hard parts are the ones that change you.

This is early. I'd rather show you the actual report and a few real reactions than invent a crowd. What you find won't change the markets. It'll change how you meet them.

I hope this saves you the years it cost me.

Field Notes

What early traders said when they read their own profile.

Unedited. These are early readers' reactions, not paid reviews.

“My pitfall has literally been my life.”
Agudelo · TIP early user
“I really appreciate the fact that TIP measures Emotional Regulation as a pillar of the framework. It's such an under-rated thing as traders that we don't often think about.”
Breakwood · TIP early user
“I looove everything that has to do with trading psychology. Reading the full PDF to my husband was like describing myself to him in real-time. Nice touch with the crisis card and personalized rules to follow based on your wiring!”
Clement · TIP early user

A research-informed read, not a marketing quiz.

TIP draws on the published literature of cognitive ability, judgment under uncertainty, emotion regulation, and personality. Its questions, scoring and summaries are TIP's own application of that work to the one context it rarely covers: the live trade.

It is honest and allergic to hype. No win-rates. No “secrets.” No performance promises. Just a clear read of how you describe your trading, that you keep, reread, and test against your own sessions.

No testimonials sold as proof. No screenshots of winning trades. The proof on this page is the instrument and the document itself: examine both, then decide.

Provenance · a selection Cattell · Horn · Carroll · McGrew · Kahneman · Tversky · Damasio · Gross · Loewenstein · Soto & John · Frederick · Barber & Odean, and the lineage of psychometric work their methods rest on.
Straight answers

Questions a
skeptic asks.

Is this just another personality quiz?

No. TIP is 89 items informed by three published frameworks: the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model of cognitive abilities, the Big Five personality framework (three traits, following Soto and John), and the Cognitive Reflection Test. The three reflection problems are Frederick's originals; the ability and personality items are TIP-written, worded for trading. It scores how you describe yourself across four dimensions and 21 sub-components.

Will it tell me what to trade, or improve my P&L?

No. TIP is a self-awareness instrument, not advice and not a strategy. It does not predict performance or guarantee profitability. It maps how you describe the way you decide, then shows where your answers and your current approach may be at odds. What you do with that is yours.

What is it actually built on?

Published research: the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model, Kahneman and Tversky, Damasio, Soto and John, Frederick's Cognitive Reflection Test, and Barber and Odean. TIP is not affiliated with or endorsed by these researchers, and the instrument has not yet been validated. The full research lineage, with every researcher named, is on the methodology page.

What do I get for $79, and when?

The free assessment reveals your archetype on screen. The $79 report is the full document: a score and a plain-language band on every ability, axis, and category; your archetype and how close the nearest alternatives are; what to check first on your own record and one practice to start with; seven rules for your archetype, a 30-day start and a 90-day cycle; and a one-page reference card. Delivered immediately, as a PDF you keep.

What if the profile does not fit me?

Fourteen-day money-back, no questions asked. The report is yours to keep either way.

Why this matters

Your brain was built to keep you alive, not to make you money, and the two reward opposite instincts. Those old instincts can move faster than your deliberate check, and they make the next system or setup always feel like the fix. In a study of 66,465 brokerage households, the most active traders lost the most, mostly to trading too much rather than to bad picks. The 89 items ahead map how you describe the way you trade, drawing on three research traditions.

01
Cognitive abilities

What you see, hold, and act on.

Six channels (pattern recognition, chart vision, working memory, decision speed, risk math, market knowledge), each scored from how you describe it. They are named after abilities in the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model, the most widely used framework behind modern cognitive ability tests.

Cattell · Carroll · McGrew
02
Behavioral routing

How your wiring acts on what it sees.

Four axes (conviction, patience, discipline, disposition effect) draw on prospect theory and dual-process cognition. They help explain why two traders with identical reads can make opposite trades.

Kahneman · Tversky · Damasio
03
Emotional regulation

Where the wiring leaks under pressure.

Eight categories (drawdown resilience, FOMO resistance, recovery speed, tilt resistance and four more) suggest which emotional pressures you handle well and which may need mechanical safeguards.

Gross · Loewenstein · Soto & John

What you read price with

Two channels fire first when you look at a chart. Most traders don't know theirs. You just named yours.

Two channels fire first. Four others trail. Both matter.

TIP is an educational self-awareness tool grounded in published research. It is not financial advice and does not predict trading performance.
Where your wiring runs cleanest

The conditions your wiring was built for

Knowing the leaks is half the work. Knowing where the wiring runs cleanest is the other half. We mapped your wiring across six instrument families. The two it fits cleanly are named below.

Two families fit your wiring cleanly. Three more fight it every day you trade them.

Your Trading Edge & Pitfall

What to Lean Into, and What to Watch For

Your primary cognitive ability gives your wiring a specific, measurable advantage in the markets. It also creates a specific vulnerability when bandwidth tightens. Knowing both is how you go from self-aware to strategically self-aware.

The Full TIP Report, built around the patterns that keep costing you.

A read on how you decide under live pressure, and a 90-day system built around it.

Before you buy, the honest part

This will not improve your P&L on its own, it is not a substitute for reps, and it guarantees no outcomes. It describes the patterns your answers point to, as hypotheses to check against your own trading. You still trade the trades.

The scores are directional, not decimal-precise. A test claiming pinpoint certainty about your mind would be the one to distrust. No testimonials sold as proof, no screenshots of winning trades: the proof is the instrument and the document itself.

Common questions
This page is the summary. The PDF is the Full TIP Report. Your 7 trading rules matched to your top two abilities (not generic). Your 90-day development roadmap with weekly check-ins. Your failure cascade storyboard so you can spot a blow-up at trade 3, not trade 6. Your mental-game exercises mapped to your weakest pressure point. A print-ready Trading OS reference card you tape above the screen. The free read shows you the pattern. The paid manual tells you what to do every session for the next 90 days.
Those map who you are in general life. TIP maps how you describe the way you decide under market pressure: your cognitive abilities, your behavioral routing when real money is live, and your regulation when a trade goes against you. The output isn’t a four-letter type; it’s one of 19 trader archetypes plus a 90-day operating system matched to the patterns in your answers. Same research lineage (three Big Five traits sit inside it), pointed at the one context those tests never cover: the live trade.
Not directly. Any product that promises it is selling you a fantasy. TIP is a self-assessment, not a signal service. It shows you how you describe the way you handle risk, pattern, and pressure so you stop building (or trading) systems your habits won’t honor. Plenty of blown accounts come from a good setup run by an operator who drifted off plan. Knowing your wiring is upstream of P&L. The math still has to work in the market.
